About Banhoek Corner

Banhoek Corner is family owned and operated private guest house in the epicenter of South Africa viniculture. It first opened as a guest house in 2020 but has a long history in Stellenbosch chronicles. Owned by a 9th generation South African, with a rich family heritage in the region and career devoted to hospitality and tourism, Banhoek Corner embodies warm South African hospitality and charm, with a polished professionalism.

Banhoek Valley History

The picturesque Banhoek Valley has a rich and fascinating history that spans centuries. From intrepid travelers and resourceful wine pioneers to dangerous animals and dense forests, the valley has seen it all.
The Helshoogte Pass, which connects the valley to the nearby town of Stellenbosch, was originally known as ‘De Bange Hoek’ or ‘dangerous corner’. Dutch farmers who crossed the steep mountain pass in the late 1600s to establish farms and vineyards encountered various challenges such as gangs, escaped prisoners, lions, leopards, and other wild animals. Despite these obstacles, they persevered and created a haven in the beautiful valley with ideal weather conditions for viniculture.
The first established farm in the valley was Zorgvliet, with its Manor home built in 1692. It is the second oldest structure in Stellenbosch and its fruitful vineyards can still be seen today from Banhoek Corner Guesthouse, located directly across the road.
Banhoek Corner’s Main House dates back to 1914 when it was originally a ‘tuck shop’ or Corner Store for neighboring farms. In 1950, the Villa was constructed, completing what is now an independent Guest House, welcoming guests from around the world to explore this historic valley.

Today, Banhoek Valley is a harmonious destination, with many award-winning vineyards, destination restaurants, and thousands of acres of protected land through the mountains for hikers and bikers. Although leopards still roam the mountainsides, the valley offers a safe and tranquil haven for travelers seeking a peaceful retreat.
At Banhoek Corner Guesthouse, we invite you to discover the rich history and natural beauty of Banhoek Valley while enjoying our warm hospitality and luxurious accommodation.
